Essential Guide to Essbase Administration in EPM 11.2.20: Key Configuration Tips and Common Pitfalls

Installing the new EPM 11.2.20 in Windows with Essbase, I discovered something I hadn’t yet encountered.

If I configure Essbase in EPM Configtool, initially all boxes are checked for “Enable Essbase”, “Enable APS”, and “Enable EAS”.

If I uncheck the “Enable EAS” box, it ALSO unchecks the “Enable Essbase” box:

If you click ‘Next’ without noticing this, the configuration proceeds, the Essbase service is created, and starts successfully. However, your mod_wl_ohs.conf file will not be updated with Essbase location information, Shared Services security will not show Essbase provisioning options, and logging into Essbase JET on port 9010 is not possible as the credentials are not properly set up.

If you re-check the “Enable Essbase” box, it also checks the “Enable EAS” box. I haven’t tried this with previous 11.2.15+ versions, so this may not be a new behavior. Oracle wants EAS Lite to be used with Essbase 21c in the EPM suite, it is not possible to configure Essbase without it.

A new Essbase application is automatically set to “Managed by Essbase Administration Services” in the Essbase JET UI. You may uncheck this box if you would like to use the Essbase UI to manage the application exclusively.

In conclusion, configuring Essbase in EPM 11.2.20 demands meticulous attention to detail, particularly when enabling or disabling components like EAS and APS. As discussed, unchecking the "Enable EAS" box can inadvertently disable Essbase, resulting in configuration challenges such as missing Shared Services security options and failed Essbase JET logins. This behavior highlights the critical interdependencies between Essbase and EAS Lite within the EPM suite. To ensure a seamless deployment, administrators should verify that both "Enable Essbase" and "Enable EAS" are checked during setup, avoiding common pitfalls. Always review your configuration settings carefully to prevent unexpected issues, and leverage the Essbase JET UI for efficient application management.
